telemetry in small animals
emka TECHNOLOGIES offers three solutions for telemetry studies in small animals such as mice, rats and rabbits:
• rodentPACK telemetry
• Telemetry Research implant telemetry
• software suite compatible with your DSI telemetry
Subjects are conscious and freely moving in the three cases.
rodentPACK
rodentPACK is a cost-effective solution for running telemetry studies in animals 250g and upwards. Applications are varied, e.g. sleep and epilepsy studies, ecg recording.
Up to 8 signals are acquired from each animal:
• 4 biopotential signals (4 eeg, or 3 eeg + 1 ecg/emg, or 2 eeg + 2 ecg/emg)
• 3-axis acceleration (for postural information)
• total acceleration.
Telemetry Research implants
Implants from Telemetry Research can be used in animals 200 g and upwards. Several transmitter implants are available for acquiring different parameters such as biopotentials, pressure and temperature. Of note, implants are available for the acquisition of sympathetic nerve activity with a sampling rate of 8 kHz.
In this system, customers recharge the transmitter batteries themselves. This makes it possible to obtain a lifetime recording!
The telemetry hardware is open so you can use any software to acquire your data.
DSI implants
Data Sciences International (DSI) offers a wide range of transmitter implants for the measurement of different parameters such as biopotentials, pressure and temperature.
iox may be used for acquisition from DSI implants - this is is possible because of the easyMATRIX interface. The analysis files can subsequently be analyzed in ecgAUTO.
Long-term studies with implanted animals are used to study:
• the long-term effects of a pharmacological product
• cardiovascular remodelling following surgical intervention
• the development of pathologies in transgenic mice (or other animals)
etc.
Star Oddi data loggers
Star Oddi telemetry system allows temperature measurement on rodents.
The logger can be programmed to record temperature as often as once per minute, to different intervals (7 different intervals can be selected, giving greater flexibility).
The lifespan of the telemetry logger depends on the loggin intervals and data transmission intervals.
Up to 10 subjects can be housed in the same cage.
Example of use
Implanted rodents are used by the cardiovascular phenotyping laboratory of the Montreal Heart Institute. Their setup includes:
-
- mice equipped with 16 ecg implants and 8 bp implants
-
- rats equipped with 8 ecg implants, 8 bp implants, and 8 implants measuring ecg and bp
-
- workstations with
iox and
ecgAUTO. All ecg intervals and segments are measured at a sampling rate of 1000 Hz
