The setup for whole-body plethysmography with freely moving animals can be used to record apneas by using the appropriate analyzer module in iox2 software (module available as an option). No extra hardware is required.
As a reminder, one signal is measured in this setup: respiratory flow from a differential pressure transducer. An apnea is considered to be a breath with specific characteristics, such as long expiratory time and end-expiratory pause.
apnea analyzer
The apnea analyzer is an add-on module for iox2 software. The respiratory flow signal waveforms go through two processing stages, which together serve to filter out apneas:
- detect a breath (including apneas).
- reject "normal" breaths.
Each stage has its own panel with user-adjustable settings. In the rejection settings panel, you provide minimum and maximum values for one or more parameters. For example, you can set the analyzer to reject waveforms with an end-expiratory pause less than than 1 second.

The apnea analyzer reports a count of apneas (per period and cumulative total) as well as several flow-derived parameters for these apneas (inspiratory time, expiratory time, peak inspiratory and expiratory flows,…).
